Qualifications

This volunteer program “Learning Arabic and Teaching English in Germany” is open to applicants who would like to help community members in Halle improve their English speaking skills. Volunteers do not need a university teaching or English degree to apply or participate. Although any academic degree is certainly welcomed, a degree is not required.

An applicant is required:

  • To be over the age of 18;
  • Must have a good attitude and  be eager and open to learn;
  • Must be fluent in English – native and non-native English speakers are welcome.

An applicant is NOT required to:

  • Speak Arabic or German

Volunteers in Germany receive 3 hours of Arabic language courses per week with an Arabic teacher. Daily immersion offers volunteers ample opportunities to meet people who assist in practicing Arabic skills effectively. Volunteers can choose what kind of Arabic they would like to learn:

What Will I Be Doing As A Volunteer for Learning Arabic And Teaching English In Germany?

  • The main thing you will do is teach two or three conversational English classes each week, either in an individual or a small class of persons, aged anywhere from 7 to 70 years old. You will be provided with teaching materials by the organization to teach creative lessons.
  • You will arrange and organize English language activities and workshops that help our students practice the English language.
  • Additionally, you will give two presentations:  One presentation will focus on the use of the ViG teaching manual, and the second presentation will focus on the customs and traditions of your native country.
  • Lastly, you will participate in weekly meetings with the director of the program, Rafat Shantir.

When Can I Start And End My Volunteering Program In Germany?

Volunteer in Germany in Germany is looking for volunteers year round. Applicants decide when they wish to start and end their volunteer experience, and the Volunteer in Germany (ViG) makes it happen. You have maximum flexibility in deciding your start and finish dates. You can volunteer from 1 – 13 weeks.

A Day In The Life Of A Volunteer In Germany

The volunteer starts their day with a breakfast at the office at 10:00 a.m. On designated weeks the volunteer may be asked to help prepare the breakfast. Once breakfast is done, the volunteer meets their students for the first English class of the day. After this, morning classes last for two hours with a fifteen-minute break in the middle.

Following the class, the volunteer takes a break for lunch, either to cook something at the office or to go out to eat with the other interns and volunteers. In the afternoon you might teach another class or find yourself studying Arabic until the office closes at 6 p.m. Volunteers in Germany are asked to assist in one cleaning duty per week.

The Volunteer in Germany charges a fee of 300€ a week, the cost includes:

What Does The Application Process Look Like?

  • The participant emails the Volunteer in Germany to receive an application.

  • If selected for the program, we will send you an acceptance letter and a contract.
  • You will need to sign the contract and send it back to us.
  • You pay the fees.

Do I Need A Teaching English As A Foreign Language (TEFL) Certificate?

No, having the TEFL certificate is not a requirement. You will be provided with a teaching manual and materials. This program is designed so that you gain experience in teaching English as a Foreign Language.

When Can I Apply And For How Long Can I Volunteer?

This volunteer opportunity is open year-round. You can apply at any time throughout the year. YOU choose your start and end dates. The minimum period of participation is one week.

Traveling to Germany on Your Own?

Following your arrival, you will regularly meet many refugees, immigrants, and other internationals, as well as Germans. The members of the community are interesting people with a variety of interests. The Volunteer in Germany organization hosts many international visitors from all over the world who will be studying, volunteering at other organizations, visiting, or volunteering at the office.

Moreover, you will be engaging with them in educational and community activities that we organize. Everyone at the Volunteer in Germany organization in Halle (Saale) – students, international visitors, and staff – is one big family, and there are always activities to do together.

Visa to Germany

If you are coming from a European country that has signed the Schengen agreement, then you do not need a visa to enter Germany. For those who come from countries that are a part of this program, you are permitted to stay in Germany for up to three months.
Furthermore, all other travelers will need to apply for a Schengen visa to enter Germany. This visa will allow you to enter and stay in Germany for a maximum period of 3 months (90 days). Another important thing to note is that this visa prohibits visa-holders from getting a job (even as a freelance) during their stay.
