German Courses for Different Interests and Language Skills

The center provides German courses for all different interests and language skills. You can learn German in our intensive and non-intensive courses, get private lessons in our one-to-one individual courses, or learn online with us. There are also German courses that prepare you for a certified language diploma or university studies. Whether you want to learn Business German, practice what you have previously studied, or enhance your speaking skills, our organization in Halle has the perfect German course for you!

We offer intensive German courses from the level of A1 to B2, all of which provide the chance of achieving your language goals. Which Levels of German are Available?

The Volunteer in Germany offers Intensive & Non-Intensive German Courses for all levels from beginner to upper intermediate (Levels offered: A1, A2, B1, B2): 

  • Starter Course (A1): This course is designed for those without any prior knowledge of German. Students begin to gain skills in reading, writing, and basic conversation.
  • Beginner Course (A2): Students with a basic knowledge of German will benefit from the Beginner Course. This course allows students to continue to improve their writing, reading, listening, and speaking skills.
  • Intermediate Course (B1): Those with a solid foundation in the German language will continue to progress in conversational skills. This course concentrates on conversing with native German speakers. Besides enhancing conversational skills, students will develop reading, writing, and listening skills.
  • Upper intermediate Course (B2): Those with an exceptionally strong grasp of German will benefit from placement in the Upper-intermediate Course. This course concentrates on achieving fluency in German.

Intensive and Non-Intensive German Courses

The Volunteer in Germany offers two types of German courses: An intensive course which consists of 20 hours of lessons per week; or a non-intensive course consisting of 12 hours per week. 

Intensive German Course: 20 Hours per week

This course is recommended for those who want to learn as much German as possible during their short stay in Germany. It is ideal for those wishing to learn German intensively and in a short period.

  • The student has five days of lessons per week (Monday to Friday). 
  • Each lesson lasts for four hours (45-minute class and a 15-minute break per hour), totaling 20 hours per week.

Non-Intensive German Course: 12 Hours per week

The non-intensive German course meets the needs of those who do not wish to take daily lessons or those who simply need more time to follow up on classroom learning or finish homework. Some students want to have more time for other activities or visiting landmarks in Germany.

  • The student has three lessons for three days each week. Students can choose which three days they would prefer (Monday to Friday).
  • Each lesson lasts for four hours (45 minutes of class time and 15 minutes of break each hour), totaling 12 hours per week.

Learn Over the Summer

The Summer Intensive German Programs and Short-term German courses are ideal for those with a summer break, students on semester breaks, professionals on a sabbatical, or any individuals looking to learn on an extended visit to learn German in Palestine, Israel, and the Middle East. The Volunteer in Germany offers Summer Intensive German Programs that span from June to September and include 4-6 hours of German learning per day.

Placement Test Not Needed

Placement tests will only be taken by students who already possess German language skills, or who have previously studied German. Those who do not have German language skills will be automatically placed in our Starter course. Our courses focus on the four language skills speaking, reading, writing, and listening.

Who Are the Courses For?

In general, the Learn German in Germany Intensive & Non-Intensive German Courses are suitable for:

  • Applicants between the ages of 16 and 75 years. Those who are younger than 18 years old may apply; however, at least one parent must sign a parental consent form. Be aware that some countries, such as the US, have laws concerning minors (under 18s) traveling outside of their country. For example, BOTH parents may have to sign a consent form.
  • People with German ancestry who want to learn the language.  
  • Those intending to work or study in Germany.   
  • University students who wish to do a semester abroad for University Credit.
  • Gap year students. 
  • University and college students who are learning German literature, Germanic Studies, European History, and languages.
  • No knowledge of German is required. 
  • Participants in the program do not need to have an academic degree and do not need to be university students. 

A Day in the Life of a Volunteer

  • The student begins the day with breakfast at the center at 9:30 a.m. On certain weeks the programme participant may be required to prepare the breakfast. To emphasize the importance of community, breakfast at the center is a shared “family” experience where all participants, including interns and volunteers, as well as staff, eat breakfast together. 
  • German classes begin at 10:00 a.m. and run to 2:00 p.m. (14:00). 
  • Lunchtime gives participants the chance to either cook something in our kitchen or to go out to eat with the other participants. 
  • After lunch, the student has the opportunity to visit sites in Halle, spend time with their host family and other participants, or join the many evening activities organized by the center.  
  •  The Volunteer in Germany closes at 6:00 p.m.

Where is Volunteer in Germany located? 

We are located in Halle (Saale), a city located in the south of the German state of Saxony-Anhalt. The city is situated along the Saale River and is the largest city in Saxony-Anhalt.  

Halle is near many other German cities such as Leipzig (25 minutes by train), Berlin (two hours by bus and 1 hour by train), and Dresden (two and a half hours by bus). Halle is also close to Prague in the Czech Republic; a bus ride from Halle only takes four and a half hours.   

How to Get to Volunteer in Germany?

The easiest way to get to Volunteer in Germany is to fly to:

  • Leipzig/Halle AirportIt takes about 25 minutes to get from the airport to the Halle via train.
  • Berlin Brandenburg Airport: If you are coming from Berlin, then you have two ways to get to the Volunteer in Germany: First is to come by bus. You can take a bus operated by companies such as FlixBus or Eurolines with the journey taking about two hours. The second choice is to come by train from the Berlin-Central Station. The train ride takes about an hour and a half.
  • Frankfurt AirportIt takes about 3-4 hours to get from the airport to the Volunteer in Germany via either train or bus (FlixBus or Eurolines).

  • The Volunteer in Germany has hosted people from a wide range of countries across the world, such as the USA, the UK, Italy, Japan, China, Canada, Singapore, Poland, and Turkey.
  • The Volunteer in Germany welcomes all people between the ages of 16 and 75, from all countries and academic majors, as well as non-students wishing to join the Learn German in Germany program. 

When and How Long is the Program?

  • There is no deadline as the program is open year-round
  • The applicant may apply at any time throughout the year
  • The applicant chooses their start and end dates
  • The applicant can join a program for one week up to three months.

Halle has a lot to offer. Students and interns can make the most of their time here by visiting the local attractions and practicing their German whilst out and about. Halle has several museums with subjects ranging from prehistory to the Beatles! There is plenty of interesting architecture, including Baroque, Renaissance, and modern buildings as well as Gothic churches and impressive towers.

Furthermore, you can also visit Halle’s oldest remaining functional chocolate factory and museum, as well as the city’s zoo. Visitors can enjoy the local food, drink, and hospitality of this enticing city.
