The Intern as an English Teacher Germany Program provides internationals the opportunity to live in the city of Halle/Saale, Germany, while studying Arabic or German, and, at the same time, intern with the Volunteer in Germany organization. International interns play a crucial role in achieving the Volunteer in Germany organization’s mission of providing the Halle community, which includes refugees, the language skills necessary to gain English proficiency. At the same time, the Volunteer in Germany organization’s hosting of people from abroad helps us to maintain a diverse cultural dialogue and language exchange here in Halle, Germany.

Many community members in Halle, including refugees, immigrants, local Germans, and students, are very eager to meet new people to learn conversational English, as well as familiarize themselves with foreign cultures.

Who can intern as an English Teacher in Germany?

We founded the Intern as an English Teacher in Germany program in 2018. Many people from myriads of countries have interned with us. People have come from countries such as the USA, United Kingdom, Canada, Spain, and Italy, to name only a few.

Our teaching interns are also able to learn about German and Arab cultures, as well as gain an understanding of the challenges that face refugees in Germany. The Volunteer in Germany organization provides small English courses with two to five students in a class. 

The program is appropriate for the following:

  • English majors and other students who wish to have an experience teaching abroad
  • Arabic and German students
  • People who wish to work as an English teacher in the future
  • Students who are studying issues involving refugees, integration, immigration, and  immersion
  • Holders of ESL and CELTA certificates

English teaching requirements in Germany

For the Intern as an English Teacher in Germany, you are required to meet the following criteria:

  • 18+ years of age
  • Experience working with an international team
  • Fluent English

What you do not need:

  • Ability to speak Arabic or German
  • To be a current student
  • Experience in teaching English
  • You do not need to be a native speaker of English
  • Teaching certifications of any kind

Teaching English Over the Summer

For people looking to teach English over the summer months in Europe or Germany in particular, the Volunteer in Germany organization offers great volunteer teaching opportunities from May to August. English Teaching experience

The Intern as an English Teacher Program is designed for university students and people who wish to teach English (whether or not they have experience).

All majors and nationalities are welcome to apply for an internship position. Upon completion of your teaching program, the ViG organization will provide the participant with a certificate and a letter of recommendation, which may then be used in career resumes or for acquiring university credits.

  • International interns instruct conversational English classes one-on-one, as well as in small groups of two to five students at the center’s offices.
  • Interns will two presentations: one presentation will focus on the teaching manual; the second presentation will focus on the culture and customs of your native country.
  • Organize group activities for English students.
  • Study three hours of Arabic or German language lessons per week.
  • Writing reports or press releases, as well as other administrative tasks for the center.

What are the Benefits of Interning at the Volunteer in Germany?

  • You are immersed in German daily life; you make new friends and engage in community and educational activities;
  • You will gain valuable experience in teaching English as a foreign language. This includes learning creative teaching techniques, and learning how to wisely plan classes to achieve the best results;
  • You will reside with an Arabic or German host family or in a shared apartment for the duration of your internship to maximize your immersion;
  • You will receive 12 hours of conversational German or Arabic per month (3/week);
  • You can travel to many other German cities, such as Berlin, Dresden, Leipzig, Munich, Frankfurt, and Hamburg, each week during your three-day weekend (Friday to Sunday);
  • A tour of the city of Halle and its sites is provided;
  • You eat breakfast at the center daily with other interns and staff.

Eligibility for The Intern as an English Teacher in Germany Program

Applicants between 18 to 75 years old are eligible to participate in the Intern as an English Teacher in Germany. All nationalities and college majors are welcome.

A Day in the Life of Interns in Germany

The interns in the Intern as an English Teacher in Germany Program start their day with breakfast at the center at 10:00 a.m. In designated weeks the intern may be asked to help prepare the breakfast. After breakfast, the intern meets with their students for the first English class of the day. Morning English classes last two hours with a fifteen-minute break in the middle.

After morning classes the intern eats lunch, either cooking something at the center or going out to eat with the other interns and volunteers. In the afternoon an intern might either teach another English class or partake in German or Arabic lessons until the center closes at 6 p.m. Interns and volunteers are asked to assist in one cleaning duty per week.

The Intern as an English Teacher in Germany duration

The ViG organization offers Intern as an English Teacher in Germany positions year-round. International participants decide when they would like to start and end their internship programs. An applicant can choose an internship program that lasts two to three months in duration.

We offer maximum flexibility to applicants. If you wish to intern for less than two months, we recommend that you check our short-term volunteering programs in Germany which can be joined from one to 12 weeks.

Which airport should I fly to?

The easiest way to get to Halle (Saale) and the Volunteer in Germany in Germany is to fly to either;

  • Leipzig/Halle Airport: To travel from Leipzig/Halle Airport to the City of Halle (Saale) via train takes approximately 25 minutes. The train station is connected to the airport, and one should take good care to board the train heading for Halle (West) and not  Leipzig (East).  
  • Berlin Brandenburg Airport: To travel from one of Berlin’s Airports to Halle, volunteers will either need to come by bus or by train once they have unboarded from their flight
    • To come via bus, volunteers will need to find routes available that are operated by either FlixBus or Eurolines. The commute from Berlin to Halle (Saale) should be approximately 2 hours by bus. 
  • For volunteers wishing to travel from Berlin to Halle (Saale) via train, they will need to depart from Berlin Central Station (Berlin Hauptbahnhof); the commute will take approximately an hour and a half. Train rockets can be bought ahead of time through Deutsche Bahn or conveniently at the train station and airport.
  • Frankfurt Airport: Both trains and buses are available to travel from the airport to the city of Halle (Saale) with both commutes taking approximately 3 – 4 hours. Please see above for further information regarding travel from outside airports.
